Frequently Asked Questions
What is a therapy dog?
A therapy dog visits children and individuals in schools and residential programs (especially those with children and special needs individuals), libraries, parks, community gatherings, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and hospitals, in an effort to improve the quality of life, activities of daily living and emotional health of those served. All visits are free-of-charge. Therapy dogs are calm, obedient, loving family pets whose owners wish to share their dogs with members of the community who could benefit from a dog's unconditional love and acceptance.
Can my dog be a therapy dog?
In order to be a therapy dog, your dog must be evaluated to determine his suitability for the program. The evaluation assesses his reactions to sudden noises, other dogs, wheelchairs, elevators and such, as well as his basic training and temperament. Once a dog passes his evaluation, he and his handler first visit with an experienced team before they are given their own assignment. Since our therapy dogs visits are so eagerly anticipated by our clients, our volunteers must commit to weekly scheduled visits. Often our clients become friends, making the experience that much more rewarding for our teams. We are always looking for new recruits!
Where do Special Spaniels Therapy Dogs visit?
We visit anywhere in Lake and Porter County, Indiana and the surrounding Chicago, IL area. We also do presentations to community service groups and youth groups when requested.
How is Special Spaniels Therapy Dogs funded?
